A Casanova’s Main Course

Before the inevitable side-effects, the quack said

the first thing to go would be my appetite.

Initially, generous portions allayed

my fears, allowed me to think I might

order double rations, click my fingers for the bill

as if unconcerned about cost, revelling in the fullness

of my heart. Over-indulgence was a way to kill

time, to avoid being trapped in the dullness

of repetition - and in wondering how broken I’d eventually be.

Embracing the challenge to seek out the new

I truffled for the unusual, the unexpected. To see

deep into the promise of others I came to view

their menus voraciously, asking Love’s chef to take special care

in preparing my entrée not medium but rare.
